Help Me Find Some Unkillable Office Plants

Plants can be great for bringing a little nature and clean air to your work space, as well as the rumored benefits of lowering stress and increasing creativity. Meg here! Maybe you’re like me and terrible with plants. Or maybe you’re like my friend Andrea, who is a pro at house plants and keeping them alive. I’ve asked Andrea to impart her wisdom by sharing the best plants for your office set up and how to keep them healthy. Here we go!

  1. Snake plant (Sansevieria)

This is probably one of the heartiest plants out there. They tolerate, even prefer, a bit of neglect. The fastest way to kill a snake plant is to over water it. It’s best to let it dry out completely between watering. They can go weeks at a time without any water, and prefer that over being watered too frequently. They can survive in anything from bright, indirect light, to low light. This makes a snake plant one of the best choices for the most novice of green thumbs.

  2. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

Much like the snake plant, the ZZ Plant is another hearty soul. It can survive drought and low light conditions. The thing to watch out for with this plant is that it is poisonous. So, may not be the plant for you if you have a furry friend that likes to chew on leaves.

  3. Wax plant (Hoya)

One of my absolute favorite plants is a wax plant. They are easy maintain in a house, and can survive in lower light. But, if you want it to ever bloom, put it in bright light, and you will be treated with some of the coolest flowers you’ve ever seen. These plants are a bit more tropical, and prefer about 50% relative humidity. In the winter or in climates where humidity is always low, you can spay it with a fine mist, or use a humidity tray. If your plant is blooming, its important to not move it, as a transition in light can cause the blooms to fall off. Also, make sure that you don’t get the bloom wet if you are misting your plant.

  4. Philodendron

Philodendrons are trailing plants that are very easy to take care of. They prefer brighter light, but can tolerate some lower light levels. What’s nice about this plant is that the leaves will start to droop when it needs water. I always appreciate it when my plants let me know!

  5. Pothos

Often confused with Philodendon, the pothos is another trailing plant that is a staple in many offices because this plant does so well under fluorescent light. It can also handle bright, or low lighting. This plant is considered toxic to pets, so if you have one that can’t seem to leave plants alone, this probably isn’t for you.

Adding a bit of green to your space has many benefits. Not only does it help your space look cozy and warm, but plants also help to keep the air inside your home clean, as they can remove toxins from your air. Give these plants a try! Don’t worry if you think you have a brown thumb. I’ve killed many plants, the key is to keep trying! It’s all a part of the process. Grab some plants and enjoy!!
